Useful Common Keyboard Shortcuts in Windows
There are many ways to get around on your computer quicker and easier. Here are some of the keyboard shortcuts you can use:
- Press Shift, then drag the mouse over the files that you want to select, to select multiple files at once. Alternatively you can hold Ctrl and click on each file individually.
- Highlight all of the files in a folder by pressing Ctrl and then A.
- Copy the files by pressing Ctrl C at the same time, or cut it by pressing Ctrl X. This step and the previous step also apply to text.
- Press Ctrl V to paste what you have copied or cut.
- Undo a mistake with Ctrl Z. Redo with Ctrl Y.
In Internet Browsers
- Press F1 for automatic help, and F5 to refresh the page you’re on. Press Ctrl F5 to refresh the current page more thoroughly.
- Open the same page again in Internet Explorer with Ctrl N.
In Word Processors
- Make text bold with Ctrl B, italicized with Ctrl I, and underlined with Ctrl U (these do not work in Notepad).
- Use Home or End to go the beginning or end of a line of text, respectively. Add Ctrl to either of these keys to go the beginning or end of the document.
- To change font size, select the text and press Ctrl > or Ctrl <. Note that this font sizing tip does not work in Notepad.
Miscellaneous
- To switch between applications use Alt and Tab
- To minimize everything use Windows M.
- To Show the desktop use Windows D.
- To maximise a window, press Alt Space X.
- To minimise a window, press Alt Space N.
- To restore a window to its original size, press Alt Space R.
- To close a window press Alt F4.
