Build Your Own Riding Hovercraft

A hovercraft just seems a bit difficult to build, doesn’t it? Well, with these directions, you can build your own fully ridable hovercraft with such easy-to-find materials as a leaf blower and plywood!

Steps To Follow

  1. Using the hole saw cut a hole (the size of the blower end or slightly smaller) 5” centered from one end of the board.
  2. Cover one side of the board with the plastic allowing the edge of the plastic to overlap onto the other side of the board.
  3. Staple the plastic edges to the board.
  4. Seal the edges and staples with duct tape. Make sure no air can escape through the tape.
  5. Staple the center of the plastic cover to the board.
  6. Carefully cut 3 rows of 2 (6 total) 4” circles in the plastic with a utility knife.
  7. Sit in the center of the board.
  8. Place the air blower end over the hole in board and blow air through the hole.
  9. Have someone gently push the edge of the board and it will move! The plastic on the bottom should inflate. If it does not, lift the plywood up a bit to let the air get inside.

Tips

  • Use a heavy 10 mil. plastic drop cloth or an old plastic shower curtain.
  • Be sure to place the hovercraft on a very smooth surface for best results.
  • A good idea is to attach a strong piece of nylon string to the front of your hovercraft so that someone can steer you.

Things You’ll Need

  • 2-4 ft. x 4-6 ft. x ¾” board (can be a rectangle, square, or circle)
  • Hole saw (size of hole should be the same or slightly smaller than the end of the blower)
  • Stapler
  • Duct tape
  • Heavy mil plastic, larger size than board
  • Utility knife
  • Air blower (exhaust of vacuum cleaner, leaf blower, etc.)
